Derbi GP1
Derbi technology and Giugiaro design

The Derbi GP1 scooter is designed to capture the high-technology and high-performance scooter market. This is one of the most hard-fought segments in the market, because it is where the world's most important manufacturers compete with their leading products. This is the reason why the GP1 has become Derbi's flagship and which means it features the most up-to-date and most sophisticated technologies. This applies from the external design to the engine and the innovative suspension, without forgetting for a moment quality and reliability. The GP1 is the outcome of an advanced design and a strict and extremely tough period of testing so as to guarantee that you find a machine that more than meets your most demanding expectations.

Advanced Design
The external design of the GP1 is the work of one of the most famous of today's design houses: Giugiaro Design. Giugiaro has created shapes combining aggressiveness with elegance and interpreting the modern, dynamic spirit of this latest generation scooter. Its shapes leave no room for doubt - They overflow with strength, power and technology. At the same time, a thousand and one details have been taken dare of in order to guarantee that you will be satisfied. In this respect, it is worth pointing out the two rear-view mirrors, spaces for carrying luggage, the instrument panel and there is even a power socket to re-charge your cell phone.

Suspension and Frame
The GP1 is built around an extremely tough steel tube, single cradle frame. The lower part is reinforced with smaller diameter tubes contributing to the rigidity of the whole assembly and the solidity of the footrest platform. On the right hand side, there is a bracket to support the radiator. It is placed in this position not only for protection against impact (in case of a spill), and to contribute to lowering the center of gravity. In addition, and this is something very important in hot, summer weather, it prevents the hot air from reaching the rider as it does in most of its rivals.

Brakes are obviously fully up to the measure of the other components. At the front, there is a 190mm diameter stainless steel disc, with a hydraulic caliper. This equipment guarantees braking that is very powerful, but above all progressive. On the rear wheel, there is also a stainless steel disc with a diameter of 190mm. The brake caliper is fixed floating so as to achieve a non-sinking effect while braking.

In this way, when braking, the rear wheel always remains in contact with the surface. One of the remarkable things to keep in mind about the braking system is that the brake tubes are covered with steel wire braiding in order to prevent expansion and so guarantee powerful braking all the time. Both master cylinders are on the handlebars.

The wheels used on the GP1 are alloys and have three spokes. The diameter is 13 inches and they carry tubeless, low profile tires, 120/70 x 13" in front and 130/60 x 13" in the rear. Thanks to these tires the GP1's performance combines agility in steering with stability and high road holding on the curves.

High Tech - Liquid Cooled Engine
The heart of the GP1, is its engine. It is a 49cc power unit belonging to the latest generation of Derbi two-stroke engines and therefore it features all the latest advances in technology. It is liquid-cooled in order to ensure constant performance and to prevent power losses due to increases in temperature. The aluminium cylinder is coated with "NI-Sl", which eliminates the risk of seizing and offers an almost unlimited service life. After long hours on the test bench, the transfer diagram has gone through major improvements, which significantly increase the thermodynamic performance and help to lower fuel consumption.

Induction is by a 14 mm. Weber carburetor and reed valve direct to the crankcase contributing to giving an instantaneous response to the throttle and to guaranteeing a generous degree of torque at low RPM. The engine produces 7 HP at 8,000 rpm. Cylinder lubrication is achieved by mixing oil in the fuel by a direct-injection pump ensuring the optimum mix at any rpm.

In order to improve the engine performance, especially at high revolutions, there is a front air scoop opening onto the carburetor air intake. This device is called the "Conducted lntake System". This feature not only gives superior performance, but also ensures perfect combustion thus reducing smoke emissions and achieving a level of consumption reduced to the utmost.

And all this is complemented by the "Hi-Sport" exhaust system. This is takes its inspiration from the world of competition. It is a "tubarro" type with "cone and counter cone" and a dual exit silencer box. Finally, to close this section, we cannot fail to mention that the starter is automatic, and the starting system, electric. The final drive is by a trapezoidal belt and automatic variable-speed drive with an automatic centrifugal dry clutch. With all these features, the GP1 is distinguished as much by its clean instant throttle response and an unashamed brilliant acceleration as by its low fuel consumption. These virtues have placed it at the head of the "High-Tech" scooter market.

Fully Equiped
A scooter of the latest generation cannot be content with the highest level of mechanical specification and the last word in design. These must be matched with the finest quality equipment and finish. In this respect, we have spared no efforts in the GP1 and there is no doubt that it is the best-equipped "Super-Sport" Scooter in the market. To start with the instrument panel, there are two dials housing the speedometer, the odometer, the analog thermometer for the cooling water temperature, the fuel gauge and four pilot lights: indicators, full beam, fuel and oil reserves. There is an automatic self-checking system for the bulbs for the reserve pilot lights.

Ergonomic controls put all the other switches within the rider's reach. He has two rear-view mirrors to hand. The headlight, of generous size and power, is a multi-surface type. It is worth mentioning the presence of a central stand together with the side stand, which is equipped with a safety switch, a ring for securing an anti-theft lock, and a power socket for a cell phone in the glove box. Under the two-place saddle, covered with a non-slip material, there is a capacious compartment with room for a helmet. At the rear, there is also a robust luggage carrier.

The fuel tank has a capacity of almost 7 liters with a reserve of 1.4 liters, while the oil reservoir has a capacity of 1.225 liters with its reserve of 0.225 liters, which ensures a generous range.
