It seemed impossible to make it better
The 80 cc off-road segment has a new leader: the
Derbi Senda R. Thanks to their excellent performances and demonstrated
reliability, this motorcycle has reached its preferential place in the
market. Nevertheless, in Derbi we are never satisfied, and to be better
is our goal. This is the reason for what we are proud to present the 2002
version of the Senda R. It's been a hard task, because the Senda R was
already a winner, a bike capable of doing anything a rider would ask.
But the Derbi engineers have done their best to improve it, and they have
reached their objectives: the new Senda R has the same spirit, but it's
completely new.
To improve the Senda R was not easy. The first
question was to know what to improve and how, and the logical answer takes
us to the key points of any bike: frame, suspensions and engine. At the
first sight, the most evident change you will see is also the most important.
The chassis is not the classic tubular double cradle type, but a fantastic
and strong, perimeter "U" steel dual beam frame, the same type used in
larger, competition bikes. It's 2 lbs. lighter, but is 50% more rigid.
This ensemble, named DPF (Derbi Perimetral Frame), has also the same geometry
as the latest Supercross machines, in order to obtain the maximum performance
from the bike, and don't forgets the practical details, as two handles
under the seat to make easy come out of any difficult situation.
The
second point is the suspension. The front fork it's a Showa USD Upside-Down,
a system in which Derbi was pioneer in the class, but now with a diameter
of 35 mm., instead of the previous 32 mm.. The trail is also increased,
with 195 mm. instead 180 mm. With this fork we achieve more rigidity,
control and stability. The rear shock absorber it's also a Showa monoshock,
improved with 200 mm. of travel instead the 185 mm. of the old model,
with DHS (Double Hydraulic System). This is fixed to a new swing arm,
lighter and stronger, and designed in order to mount a flat sprocket,
also more rigid than before, that allows to maintain the right chain tension
in any situation.
The third point is the engine. It's still the well
known and dependable Derbi 80 cc. The aluminum cylinder maintains the
Ni-Si (Nickel-Silicon) treatment, with its excellent protection against
damage, but inside it there are several changes in order to improve power
and elasticity, thanks also to a new exhaust and carburetor. The engine
is also lighter, because the gear forks and the clutch plate are now aluminum.
The six-speed gearbox allows the engine to be started while itŐs in gear,
simply by pushing the clutch and kicking the well designed lever. The
new exhaust is Low Boy Type, with racing style silencer and anti corrosion
varnish, and its also responsible of the gain of power and torque. Finally,
the new radiator has more cooling capacity, and also the water pump is
more efficient.
In order to improve safety, the new Senda R has
a battery, which powers itŐs headlight and powerful horn. This one has
a new and modern design, and includes speedometer, tachometer, and warning
lights for water temperature, fuel reserve, high beam light and signals.
The rims are aluminium made, 21" the front one
and 18" the rear, with new axle boxes which are now reinforced. The front
stainless disk brake is 240 mm. diameter.
The
new Senda R has a lot of details to improve the performance for riding
and off road use. The side stand is an enduro type, reinforced and with
its shapes adapted to the bike in order to not disturb in the more difficult
. The brake lever is in aluminum, and the handle bar follows the latest
fashion, the OBS technology (Open Bar Safety), without central bar, but
with a second tube inside it reinforcing this part and leaving flexibility
at the end to minimize vibrations. The handles are racing style, and the
control switches are also of the latest design. Following the success
of the previous models, the oil and gas caps are protected by a cover
with locks, the same as the seat.
The general design of the bike has been the object
of special care. The look of the new Senda R is aggressive, and styled
in the line of the competition bikes of larger capacity. The bodywork
is all new, the fuel tank, the side covers, the graphics and the seat
like a supercross machine, covered by a anti-skid material. ItŐs 100%
racing.
In short, the new Derbi Senda R receives a host
of innovations, some of them very spectacular, and some of very fine details.
At the same time, it keeps all the qualities that have made of the Senda
R the best bike in its class. This is the new Derbi Senda R.
