Compete, with who?
Following the explosive growth that Derbi is carrying
out, the latest success is the Supermotard. This all-new model features
such innovative features for the category as the double headlights, rev
counter and exclusive styling.
For the design of this motorcycle we have taken
as reference point the successful Senda R, but instead of adapting pieces
of that one, the project team built this with a host of new components.
In Europe the latest craze in "City-Sport" is motorcycles
that evoke the styling of an enduro bike, but with the wheels, brakes
and suspension of the road going "Super Bikes". This was born of the "Super-Moto"
racing series, which saw popular road and off-road racers compete on a
course of part tarmac and part dirt. The category has evolved with many
of the largest motorcycle manufacturers producing street-legal replicaÕs
of their racing products, including Derbi.
The Derbi has been endowed with an excellent double
beam chassis, worthy of motorcycles of higher capacity, the already well-known
DPF (Derbi Perimeter Frame) an strong frame made in high resistance steel,
with "U" shape linking the steering pipe
and the swing arm. In the central part the engine is held with the help
of a light tubular sub-frame. The figures are spectacular: a kilo less
of weight and an increment of the rigidity of anything less than fifty
percent. The geometry of this chassis is different with regard to the
Senda R and it is similar to the one that they use on much larger motorcycles.
Obviously this guarantees to the rider an unwavering precision and stability.
The suspension is also unique. The fork is a new
Showa USD (Upside Down), the bars are of 35 mm and the travel of 195 mm.
with damping rates specific to the bike. As for the rear end, a Showa
double effect shock absorber with 200 mm. travel is used, the system is
called DHS, Double Hydraulic System. This shock is connected in the back
part of the new swing arm with asymmetric arms to allow the employment
of a flat sprocket, much more rigid than before, that allows also to counteract
the effect of the chain under acceleration.
The heart of the bike is its engine, the robust,
dependable and powerful Derbi Ni-Si of 49 cc.. The inside treatment of
the aluminum cylinder of Nickel - Silicon, exclusive in this category,
it's an absolute guarantee of excellent performances. The thermodynamic,
the exhaust and the carburation have been object of careful work of improvement
with what is obtained better torque and superior power. It has less weight
thanks to the employment of an aluminum gearbox fork and clutch plate.
It has a close ratio six-speed gear change, that allows you to start the
engine with a gear selected. The Low-Boy type exhaust is in great measure
responsible of the quiet exhaust note, and with a finish of refined metal
and varnish anticorrosion it has a "racing" look. The rectangular radiator
has more coolant power, and also the water pump is powerful than before.
The battery is of great capacity and it allows
you to have a powerful and constant light, and a horn that it is truly
made hear. It also contains an auto-checking system for the fuel and oil
warning lights. The dashboard includes rev counter as well as a spectacular
back-lightning, that allows more safety in night riding. The rest of controls
are the speedometer, the odometer and the water temperature, fuel reserve,
oil, and turn signals lights.
The new polished aluminum trims of the Supermotard
are 17 inches, mounting specific tires for this bike. The front one is
100/80-17 and rear we find a spectacular 130/70-17." The front disk brake
is new, passing from 220 mm to 260 mm. Because of that bigger diameter,
it has been designed a new support of the caliper, the shafts are reinforced
and the front disk is mounted with six screws instead of three. Everything
has been improved for the sake of reliability and high-performance braking.
It
is necessary to highlight the new front headlights, first and only in
their category with a double optic style that confers an aggressive and
modern design, at the same time that it improves the illumination. The
side stand is curved in order to have a better adaptation to the side
of the bike and to not bother the rider, and that it will not touch the
ground in the impressive lean angles that this bike allows you to make.
The foot pegs are retractable in 45 degrees, and are rubber recovered.
The rear brake is worked by means of an aluminum lever with a curved design.
The handles are very ergonomic, the controls are more effective than the
precedents, with the turn signal cancelled by means of a simple finger
pressure. As in previous models, a single key closes a cover that protects
the fuel and oil caps, and also works the steering lock.
The general design of this bike incorporates a
front fender that is totally new adapting to the Supermotard style, it
is an element of specific design and not an enduro one clipped as they
use in most of other manufacturers. In the design of the graphics the
special design has prevailed together with the elegance and aggressiveness
that combined with the saddle design to form a harmonious group.
In summary we will say that the new Derbi Supermotard
is a brilliant combination of all the new technology that improved the
successful Senda R and the necessary refinements that create the Supermotard.
It is an effective, speedy, sure and aggressive motorcycle that will provide
the most Smiles per Mile.
